Microbe Scan has been working to develop a handheld field deployable water testing unit for bacterial detection. The vision of this product will allow a person to determine if the water has bacteria. If the water has bacteria then futher testing will be required to identify the specific pathogen. Presently this requires taking the water to a lab and then testing the water which can take several days. This product will allow the water to be tested in hours rather than days. And if the water is free of pathogens you can know within minutes.
Currently we have developed methods of detection that utilized a method that will amplify the pathogen size we believe that this method will allow quick detection through use of the handheld unit. Microbe Scan has access to Amnis Flowsight cytometer, Omnilog, and other instruments to aid in validating the handheld instrument.
The purpose of this development is to aid people who are in areas of the world who do not have access to clean water resources. Knowing how to treat the water before consuming is essential for improving the lives of children who live in these parts of the world. Being able to know if water is safe to drink, or knowing how to effectively treat the water will aid in better health for many. The technology while very useful in third world countries would also prove to be effective for well owners anywhere in the world.
